High-performance fabrics represent one of the most dynamic sectors within the textile industry, with the global market expected to grow rapidly by 2035, driven by government programmes, environmental legislation and technical developments.[1] From outdoor apparel to high-end fashion, designers are looking for materials that offer both advanced performance and sustainability, while meeting their exacting standards.
However, only few fabrics have achieved the legendary status of our Ventile cotton. Offering outstanding breathability, water resistance and durability, Ventile continues to set the benchmark for natural performance textiles.
The Origins of Ventile
Ventile was originally developed during World War II to help save the lives of pilots navigating the sky. During the war, pilots were often forced to make emergency landings in the sea, and therefore, there was an immediate need for a garment that could be worn comfortably in the cockpit yet would also keep them warm and dry in the sea long enough to be rescued.
With no existing fabric on the market, a team of visionary scientists at the Shirley Institute in Manchester, England, set out to engineer a solution. After months of innovation and rigorous testing, Ventile was born in 1943.
A Natural Performance
Our journey and legacy didn’t stop with the military use of our fabrics. It also evolved into a symbol of resilience and performance across the world’s harshest environments.
The unique way in which Ventile is crafted – densely woven from extra-long staple cotton fibres – means our fabrics are weatherproof, highly breathable, and water resistant with a PFC-free DWR. Thanks to these properties, Ventile quickly gained a reputation among explorers and outdoor pioneers that is still unmatched.
Standing the Test of Time
In an era where we are starting to see more connections between performance and natural materials, Ventile remains at the core of enduring innovation.
With a heritage of over 80 years, our fabrics continue to prove that true innovation is not always about the newest invention, it can also be about refining and preserving the best of what already exists.
